Three days after providing a $700 billion bailout for Wall Street, Congress is holding its first hearing into what caused U.S. financial markets to collapse last month.
Days from becoming the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history, Lehman Brothers steered millions to departing executives even while pleading for a federal rescue, Congress was told Monday.
I hope they get to the bottom of this mess!

I'm curious to know how the administration of these companies could continue to take large bonuses and not be accountable. I would also like to know how the Bush administration could not see this coming since they could finance two wars and allow fuel prices to soar while the housing market became a fiasco. There are an awful lot of of congressional leaders on both sides as well as government overseers of the economy who deserve to be held accountable. If you are wealthy enough this will only be a small adjustment in your finanical life, but as a middleclass worker, retiree, disabled, or those who are at the bottom of the economic spectrum, this will be a life altering event.
Bush kept warning, the Treasury kept warning.
Dems blocked ALL legislation in the Senate.
They only care for their own pockets.
Confiscate their ill-gotten money thru obscene paypacket, bonuses, etc to plough back into the stock market.
Finally, send them to do janitor's job by cleaning up others' @!$%#s for they have created too much bull@!$%#s.
Article didn't say very much.
aka: "Down Jones"
I hope congress is going to look into contributions received by our presidential candidates, certain members of the senate banking and finance committees, and members of its own house.
The citizens of this country have, and they don't like what they see.
Corruption, fraud, obstruction, and just plain theft. If the congress can't see any issues, I'm sure that American taxpayers will be more than happy to point them out.
That article is terrible, which is the norm for MSNBC. Call up Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Bill Clinton, Obama...These are the people that profitted from this mess. This will be another wasted opportunity in order to save some senate rear ends.
Oh please. Demonstrate how Obama has profited and McCain, Bush and other members of the wealthy elite have not! Otherwise you are just slinging mud: all you people have left when the real discourse runs out.
By the way, monkeys sling feces too when up a tree. We should fund research on correlations between right-wing viewpoints and lower primate behavior.
Here is a great place to start an investigation.

I'll list the senate and house contributions received next.
Than everyone will know who's responsible
Truly Republican
perish the thought you have indicated already who you will point the finger at
(truly republican) lol
olzapato:I have always been open minded when its come to politics. I am not a supporter of nor a critic of either party. I take pride in the fact that I can look openly at all the information gathered and make a sound judgment.NOBODY FORCES POLICY OR ANY CANDIDATE DOWN MY THROAT. I make my own choices. To be a True Republican is to believe that this country, this Republic of the United States is based on sound laws and equal administration of those laws to the entire country. Not just the citizens, but our elected officials are to be held to those laws.PS: I was a registered Dem before going Independent.Vote Third Party
Who's responsible? Are Americans that dumb? Elected officials are responsible. They took contributions to look the other way. Any where else it would be a bribe.
I think the banks are seriously at fault, when they gave credit and mortages to people with bad credit or didn't have a down payment on a house. I also blame huge companies gambling with hard working American's money. My husand and I looked at are 401K last week, and we are mortified. We lost quite bit, and today stock board numbers are dissmal. I'm afarid to look at what we have left, if there is any. It's terribly depressing. I think Hedge Funders who speculate on imagery estimates that suppose to bolster the ecomony were dead wrong too. They should be held accountable and brought to trial. If we are going to point fingers at politicians, then lets seriously look at the banks and the CEO's from Hewlett Packard to Exxon
Dont forgit the greedy credit card companies have you saw the millions of dollars they have raked in on just late payments and overdraws
But on the BRIGHTER SIDE this probably means I will stop getting at least 10 credit card offers in every mail delivery, and no more offers for personal lines of credit cloggin my mail box. That should save a few trees and help mitigate global warming, if nothing else. See - there's always a bright side :)
Vote smart.
Ozapato, that is true but who over extended themselves? The American people.
Oh it was a enticement, no doubt. But the mindset for too many years has been buy now pay later ... Maybe. Buying what wasn't always needed and what was beyond their budget, had they taken the time to establish one. There is enough blame to go around. Congress and CEO's drunk with power. Congress asleep at the wheel of the ship of state. Now we are all subject to the bail out of that sinking ship.
We know the problem, we know the causes, and we see the result of greed. We can beat it to death 10X's over but WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?
End the damn war in a 3rd world $hit hole before we become one.
End Foreign Aide, we're bleeding here at home.
End ALL Wet Back benefits including anchor babies.
End pork barrell GRAFT, call it what it is.
End obscene benefits to Congress/Washington politicians and CEO's
Tax outsourcing so it is no longer profitable to move business elsewhere.
It takes longer to write a high school thesis than it did for a bunch of fools to come up with a bailout plan that equates to a sive. Damn crooked fools, vote all the bums out, R&D parties. The party is over.
Bush referred to his friends and family as the have and have mores--now we know why. They sure were determined to get all the money they could and Congress complied.
"Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends..." These proceedings should be about as productive as all the times they've hauled the oil exec 's up to Capitol Hill. Just another Dog & Pony show to make the masses think congress gives a damn about them. If you want justice, it's up to the American People.
Remember...
It ain't a Revolution until you...HANG SOMEBODY!
Well, personally, I'm a big fan of "tarring and feathering" myself.Do we do that anymore?
As for hanging... so many necks, so little time.
Oil is down so tar should be cheap. And since we'll be buying in bulk we can get a discout.Rope can be bought by the 1000' roll. This way no two scumbags will have to share a rope.Nobody likes using something that's been used before by another.Besides they all should get their own rope, each and everyone of them deserved it.It's a small price to pay for equallity.
Bring back the guillotine. That will make them pause.
Now now, people, let's not talk about murdering people on my seed.
I know you're mad, but get a little bit more creative and less homicidal! :-P
Ooohh... a smart shopper.... I like that! Now, if we only knew someone that knew how to tie good knots, we'd be almost there. We should also get little signs so we can put their names on them, leave the rat bastards hanging for a few days in the middle of Wall Street to forewarn others not to be so greedy. Just a thought.
Ok, Mystic Chick. So maybe the hanging thing is a bit over the top.
Do you think we can still work on tarring and feathering?
Tarring and feathering is fine with me. It's not lethal. In fact, tar is probably a pretty effective sun-screen. Just imagine you want to protect the evil CEO's from UV rays with a full-body coating of tar!
Mystic Chick, You surprise me!!
I've run across a lot of seeders on Newsvine that purge anything that even remotely does not agree with their opinion. Thank you for being fair!! It's truly appreciated and welcome.
Leprechaun1230
As a former Boy Scout leader and knot instructor I can show you sone great ways to tie a noose.
Just if it's needed mind you, :-)
I've run across a lot of seeders on Newsvine that purge anything that even remotely does not agree with their opinion.
Thanks Dave. :-) I'm a centrist and registered Independent so I really don't have a "side" to identify with. I'm pretty aggressive in deleting racist/sexist posts but other than that I try to just remind people that we need to be nice. It's ok to disagree! :-P
*I* think we should stick these CEO's in a house with an adjusted loan, take away their inflated salaries, and see if they can find a job and survive three months while trying not to lose the house. Give them ramen to eat, no cable TV, and faulty plumbing in the house. They can't just call their maintenance supervisor to fix it, either. They have to fix it themselves or pay for a plumber!
They need to learn how it feels to live in the REAL world.
I highly agree! then they could see what it is like to live in the real world.
Actually I believe they should take everything these guys have ever made and make them live off welfare for no less than 5 years. Prison time is too expensive and when they get out, they'll still have their fancy houses and plenty of money. Let them go to the grocery store with food stamps, let them drive a 12 year old car worth less than $2000 and live in public housing. They should never, ever be able to work around money or consulting again, even the till at walmart. The slaughter floor at a chicken processing plant would be appropriate place i believe.
There's some crimes that can cost regular people to lose their homes, cars and jobs and sometimes the people commiting these crimes do them simply to survive or feed their kids. We should not allow these bums to be treated any better.
Don't we see that Corporations use the First Amendment as a loophole to create PAC and buy influence? If they had a particular point of view, would they not support only one or the other candidate? By supporting both candidates, they ensure themselves of either candidates support, no matter who gets in office!!! This is called influence buying, flat and out CORRUPTION
IF YOU'RE ANGRY AND HAVE EXHAUSTED ALL YOUR VENTING AND HAVE GOTTEN NOWHERE...AND IF YOU ARE NOW REALLY MAD AND WANT TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT...READ ON.
To everyone who is totally Fed Up with this self serving, lying, cheating and deceitful government. To those who are tired of having to live beyond your means because your paycheck doesn't go far enough as inflation eats into it and salaries stagnate. To those who want this country to return to the simple principals of balanced budget, manufacturing what we need and only importing what we cannot, to eliminating the greed from our corporate world.
And, to those want change and are willing to make the commitment to bring about this change, even if it take one neighbor, one friend, one co-worker at a time.
I am determined and organizing a nationwide "revolt" against this government, the corporate greed, and the wrong direction of this country. To establish accountability, honesty, responsibility and credibility into our government. To to return to basic values and principals upon which to rebuild this country, and begin to hold elected officials accountable, and return this government "Of the People, By the People, and For the People".
If you're interested in such a movement, email me Sburbnman@gmail.com, and visit FedUp.Com
It is time for another "Boston Tea Party" to send a message of "No Taxation without Representation!". America is Fed UP of this corrupt, self serving, greedy, power hungry, government "By corporations, For Corporation and Of Corporations!".
It is time to take back this country from those who have hijacked it for their own benefits, while we still have the time, the ability and the opportunity to do so. Before it goes so far that we it be impossible to restore the country back to who it belongs, AMERICANS!
Mitch.
Unfortunately, you're wasting your time.... Ron Paul tried to do exactly that, and look how it turned out. I have no idea why no one would listen to him, it's a very sad thing, everyone is fed up and mad, but one of the two party puppets will be in the white house come January....
Have you heard of Tourches and Pitch Forks what needs to be done is to have everyone send this to their congressman state and federal
Also JB62 When you hear the storm troopers comming just sit in a corner and cover your head.
Did you notice Bush's cousin was an executive at Lehmans? Oh what a web we wove to decieve the public. Bush, Chaney and all the others should not be permitted to draw a pension from tax payer dollars. Use the money they stole from the taxpayer, that would be more than enough to support their high life styles during retirement.
OK - in this case there is a bankruptcy judge - if he doesn't get every dime back from these theives then he needs to be replaced. Nice to see another Bush is involved.....
I nominate Chariman Henry Waxman who is conducting the hearings and Dick Fuld, former CEO of Lehman Bros. for "Major Jerk Awards". Waxman has conducted the hearings, so far, in a very partisan way. He takes no time trying to blame the Republicans and the Republican administration and has taken his shots when Republican members of the committee continue to ask why the committee is NOT asking why it is NOT looking at Fannie and Freddie who were government-controlled entities which were more out of control than Lehman Bros.
Waxman continues to attack Wall Street private companies and refuses to acknowledge that Fannie and Freddie, to the American taxpayer, was the more economically devastating.
Waxman openly blames Republicans for the economic problem, but failed to note the connections between Fannie and Freddie and Democrats like Barney Frank and Chris Dodd OR that Republicans had tried time and again to put stronger regulations on Fannie and Freddie.
This kind of partisan politics is not going to help, and it is going to enrage the American taxpayer and voter even more than we are now. By the way, I am a libertarian.
Dick Fuld's testimony made me absolutely SICK for his utter detachment from the problem event alhough he SAYS he is totally responsible! The man blames everything except the kitchen sink as the reason for the fall of Lehman and for all the troubles in the financial markets. The man should have bowed his head in shame, but no....
What a lieing, theiving P.O.S. He can't even answer a siimple question. Do you think your compensation was fair?
I would say to you.....
Send him to the gallows!
Congress grilling the CEOs? That's the pot calling the kettle black. They will spend a lot of taxpayer dollars in this investigation and in the end let the SOBs off the hook. They are already saying "stupidity is not a crime" ? Like these CEOs were just being stupid? Yeah, right !
In this case, I think stupidity may very well be a crime.
Please people get your facts straight before you post something you'll regret.
All this started during the Clinton Administration - those fair-minded Democrats wanted everyone to have a dream home even if they couldn't afford it, and they had no problem running to the bank with their underhanded deals. Democrats definitely profited more in campaign contributions, etc. from the mortgage and real estate markets.
Bush is not a "perfect president" but he is not at fault for everything. Just like Obama is not the "Savior" of everything.
The esteemed Democrat Senator Carl Levin was quoted this morning as saying that this entire fiasco was due to lack of Republican financial regulation!
These politicians are liars, not even very good at spinning. Both Carl Levin and Sandor Levin voted to use taxpayer funding for the Bailout, as did Kwami's mommy. It pains me to say that (R) Joe Knollenberg did too, but his opponent in November (D) Gary Peters oversaw a 38% increase in pay for the Michigan legislature without voicing any comments against it. The point is it's very doubtful that these hearings will conclude by election day and any new crop of politicians coming in are cut from the same cloth as the existing ones.
All the politicians will continue to lie to deflect any blame from themselves, Clinton, Bush, Fannie and Freddie, scores of other financial firms and the CEO's who don't even have the intestinal fortitude to acknowledge their mistakes and disgorge their corrupt and ill-gotten gains. The majority of Congress has already proven they can't be trusted to do the right thing. Why would anyone think they will hold the CEO's feet to the fire. If they do, then who gets to pay the CEO's legal fees (taxpayers) when Congress botches the proceedings and the judge dismisses the cases?
We can continue to rant and rave about which side of the aisle we distrust more. The fact of the matter is that deregulation did contribute to this fiasco. I watched CBS' 60 minutes last night, in which several people stated that great care was taken to term insurance polices which were not covered by capital as "swaps" because the term "insurance" could be regulated and "swap" could not. To investors who first broke up already failing mortgages into tiny little pieces, then offered them on the market as "investments", then offered the "investors" "insurance" policies for the risky "investments", only they didn't use the term "insurance" as it would have to be regulated. . . to the physicists and mathematicians who conceived of these formulas when nobody knew what the consequences were, to the unbelievable greed of every CEO who continued to offer golden parachutes as their companies went down in flames and the American taxpayers were forced against their will to pay for their mistakes and arrogance: These are the people you should blame. It is abominable, no matter which side of the aisle you are standing in.
As I watch my 401k disappear, I can't tell you how much better it makes me feel that Fuld feels just terrible.
Everytime I think I cannot be any more shocked or incensed - I learn something new. I can not believe that these clowns at Lehman actually had the nerve to expect and received bonuses for flying that company into the ground! All the while whining to the feds to help bail them out. THAT IS MY MONEY THAT IS BEING PANDERED AWAY.
Not only do they not hold Lehman's CEO's feet to the fire (they pose a tough question to him and them move the conversation to the next congressman's question without requiring a response) they have the idiocy to ask his advice on what will fix the system. What is this?
This is BS - and let's move on. That is exactly what this is. Here's the thing, I have been in the mortgage industry for almost 30 years - the fact of the matter is, this industry has NEVER had the self discipline to regulate itself. It is absolutely amazing to me that anyone with an ounce of sense did not see this coming. You can not elminate all the credit approval rules and think that you will have quality loans. You can not create loan programs that are so complex that your loan origination staff, let alone the poor borrowers out there understand them or what they are getting into.
You can not create securities model projections that are "so sophisticated" and complicated that the people who created them don't understand them.
And last, but not least - you can not condone years of greed and anything goes attitude without paying the price. We are all paying the price. This same thing happened in the 80s with the S& L failures - did we learn - NO. We just figured out how to screw up on a grander scale.
Maybe Fuld should consider giving some the millions back he raped out of Lehman (him and his cohorts, including Bush's nephew (or whoever he was)) tht would probably help him feel better.....I know it would me.
What can anyone say? I am awestruck at the arrogance of Fuld and his ilk. They had to know they were going under, yet passing out millions of bonuses. Take your choice, they were to stupid to be CEO's or purposely pillaged the company. Yet us working stiffs, get to bail out these guys. By the way, I can see why one would call $20 million a "special payment". It would be very special to most of us.
"What has happened is an absolute tragedy," Fuld said in prepared remarks. "I feel horrible about what happened."
Oh, I BET he feels horrible.... but you don't see him giving back his millions, do you?
These people are so greedy.... it just makes me sick!!!
Who's Responsible??
Under Jimmy Carter we received the Community Reinvestment act. This law says banks have to make loans in low income areas and it has forced many lending institutions to seek to make loans to people in areas that lenders would not normally go because of the risk and low property values. (Sub-Prime Loans). This was in 1977. In 1980 President Carter and a Democratic controlled congress passed the Depository Institutions Deregulation and Monetary Control Act--The law also removed the power of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors under the Glass-Steagall Act and Regulation to set the interest rates of savings accounts. A sad fact is we are all still feeling the effects of his policies and decisions 30 years later.
<
Then in 1995, President Bill Clinton made changes to the Community Reinvestment Act that forced an increase in the number of loans to these people and the aggregate dollar amounts loaned.-- Larger loans to people with less income in areas where the collateral value would go down instead of up. ( Clinton should have had his mind on the long range effects of this instead of Monica.) This was in response to pressure from 'community organizers'. Can you think of a former Community Organizer running for president? Hint - he's a Democrat
In 1999 Mr. Clinton signed to repeal the Glass-Steagall act which had protected taxpayers since the Great Depression.
In 2003 President Bush tried to propose a change in regulatory control over Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae and place both companies under the control of the Department of the Treasury, but was voted down by the liberal democrats led by Barney Frank. Remember the name Barney Frank, he is one of Obama's top two economic advisors; the other is Jim Johnson who was the head of Freddie Mac and walked away with $24,000,000.
Now, Mr. Obama and his liberal cronies are spinning the facts so you will believe that all our financial problems are because of Bush's failed economic policy. However, Obama's two most-trusted economic advisers to his campaign are the very people that were in control of Freddie Mac-Jim Johnson $24,000,000 and Fannie Mae-Franklin Raines $90,000,000 in 6 years. In addition, since 1989 there have been several politicians who have received campaign donations and kick backs from these two failed institutions. The #1 recipient is Senator Chris Dodd-D RI and the runner up is none other than Senator Barrack Obama who received the second largest amount of donations (over $500,000) which is phenomenal because he has only been in the Senate for 3 years.
I thought Ronnie Regan's mantra was "de-regulate..de-regulate..de-regulate" there seems to be a bit of a gap in your timeline
Read my first comment. You can continue to blame every administration, and every administration was and is at fault for agreeing to deregulation, but the fact of the matter is that these companies not only took full advantage of it, but went to criminal lengths to try and outfox the American public, which they did. Their acts are egregious. If they were drug dealers, their profits would be seized. Why their personal accounts (offshore and otherwise) are not frozen, their assets (homes, boats, vehicles, vacation property, jets, helicopters, everything that is not a necessity) is not seized, and their pensions and parachutes not deflated is beyond me. To continue to allow them to profit from their criminal acts is the truly astounding and if there are not laws to sanction them, then Congress' next act should be to write them in their new oversight and regulatory statutes.
are you kidding me? GW bush's cousin a lehman brother executive? Lehman brothers pleading for money from the government while dolling out millions to executives? Are they serious? 480 million in pay over 4 years and he drives the company into the ground? That is fraud plain and simple. Someone should be fined and prosecuted. This is insane.
The House should "grill" them alright!
I will be glad to bring the barbecue sauce and skewers. They should be prosecuted and jailed. This is human GREED to the ultimate extreme!
Travesty of justice!
