During one of the most heated elections in U.S. history, party lines are dividing loved ones, including that close-but-often-contentious relationship: mothers and daughters.
Faced with a daughter whose political views are opposite her own, a mom may feel like her kid is rejecting everything she worked so hard to teach
She may feel that way, but the reality is that moms do their best to teach you how to make your own decisions.
My parents are slightly irked that I refuse to tell them who I'm going to vote for. They're voting McCain. To my parents I say, "Tough." It's MY vote and I'm going to vote my conscience, not to please my parents.

I got banned from Thanksgiving for responding to a pro-McCain email chain my Grandmother sent out. The email included acusations that Obama is a Muslim (and therefore a terrorist). I sorta called them a bunch of bigots. Turns out you're not supposed to say that to bigots (they get angry: "I'm not a bigot! It's not my fault that Muslims are all terrorists!"). I can sympathize with this story... but it's still pretty funny.
Then, there's the flip side of this story: My mom, age 73, and me, age 48, could not agree more about the need for Barack Obama to be elected.
We're both taking our vacation time to work full time here in Colorado starting Saturday.
Now if my father (who was born in 1921, passed in 2004) were still alive, there would have been an enormous divide in our family. I'm talking what is colloquially called a 'knock-down drag-out' mother of all arguments. Mom would have had to have moved in with me for awhile.
Politics and religion are notorious for dividing families.
As in my own case where "they" are evangelical zealots who can and will rationalize and justify any and every conceivable corruption, illegality, and immorality (a.k.a. Bush/ McCain/Palin) by anyone claiming to be doing God's will. It is absolutely staggering! And they will disown and ostrasize even their own bloodline if they have a different opinion, and amazingly will believe they are too, doing God's will.
I'm pretty much banned too!! But they're actually doing us all a favor. It cuts down on the arguments. Now at least I have a peaceful (and joyful) Thanksgiving/Xmas dinners with my own family!
My parents, 79 and 81, are both voting Obama as am I as are my kids as are most of my siblings. My problem is my spouse........he voted for McCain. We have had heated debates with neither side changing views. I will get my satisfaction on November 4th.
Obama/Biden 2008
My sisters husband was for McCain while she is for Obama. Her kids who graduated with honors as well, are all for Obama. The kids convinced the Dad to go for Obama and now, he is driving his fellow workers to the polls and hosting dinner on election day. He decided to volunteer to make calls for Obama ! :))
Poor guy...
Why are young people all of a sudden so interested in this election? I remember Nixon/Kennedy election. My dad was a protestant minister. Although I was too young to vote, I remember how protestants were preaching don't vote for a Catholic. Turns out Nixon is the one who got the deception award, and he went to Whittier College in California. Isn't that a protestant school? Is the issue this time race? When it was Obama and Hillary, I thought it was to choose between a woman and a black man. Now it's Obama and Palin. I personally believe it's still the same, an issue of a woman and a black man. I'm asking with all due respect, please. The issue of race will never be comfortable for everyone. That will be an issue that will go unresolved to the end of the world. That hatred and dislike will never resolve. I'm voting for neither one. Obama is all talk and no experience. McCain is all Bush.
It is easy to understand. The younger generation does not have enough common sense to come in out of a shower of rain. It is all about ME, Me, Me. They are more concerned with Carisma than substance. Same thing Adolph Hitler had going for him.
The younger generation does not have enough common sense to come in out of a shower of rain. It is all about ME, Me, Me.
You're going to have to come up with something a little bit better than that, Black Knight. That's what EVERY older generation says about the younger generations. "Young people just don't have any sense these days" yadda yadda yadda.
Don't insult my generation, man. We're not stupid.
Please, just try to be happy that young people are getting involved and voting.
People should vote for who they think will take the country in the direction they think the country should go in. Unfortunately, I think too many young people (not all) dont have enough knowledge, understanding, and I hate to say it, but national pride to know what the best direction for the country to go in is. Too many people today are taught that America is evil and has an evil history, and therefore have revised "patriotism." Impacts of historical events are analyzed by todays standards, rather than the context in which such events occured.
You've heard this before: it is the sixties. Youths who rebelled then are now the adults. They have a different views and values than those who created the greatest nation on earth. Those people are essentially gone or dwindling, and national pride went with them. The rebels are now the teachers. They are the parents and grandparents now. And they dont teach the upcoming generation well. But these new generations dont know that they dont know. Its very sad.
Black Knight
Wow, another incarnation of our old pal Adolf. One minute he takes on the guise of President Obama and now a young woman. What a talented guy!! I wonder who's next. After all Halloween is just around the corner.
The karl rove name calling is why the angry old guy is going to lose. All you folks are doing is draging him down with your nonsense. I am happy that young people are voting and it appears that more than enough of them are going to reject the issue avoidance tactics you seem to pursue.
Keep up the good work. Seig Heil!!
Black Knight, talk about generalizing. There are young people voting for Obama and McCain, not just Obama. They aren't all lemmings.
There are very knowledgable young people...and old people and some people in between..It goes without saying soem ignorant oens in all categories. Just ebcause we tend to dismiss the opinion of a person with green hair, or a smooth face, does not mean that person is not thoughtful, informed and caring. They have their lives ahead of them and are prepared to take whatever risks they select ..I admire the younger citizens..as much as I admire the older ones- who are thoughtful and informed. I think as we get older we are clearly a bit more rooted in our views and ways..maybe a little more emotionally tied to them...I try not to be..but ..who knows... I am very happy to see so many young people...I can remember a tiem when a "young" fellow from Mass. inspired many young people.... Not terribly different... Also a "barrier" breaker..He was an RC...
To all whom suggest that the younger less experienced voter is foolish or less knowledgeable for supporting something that might be different, I suggest you take a quick look at our political history over the past 30+ years we have been on the wrong track for sometime now and for people to keep supporting the same old misleading misguided political garbage is just stupid!
Ummm it was the so called "greatest generation" that was around for Hitler, huh???
It seems to me that older generations haven't done any better. You've given us, Vietnam, Korea, World War II, World War I, the Civil War.
And those are just the most prolific wastes of lives and resources.
I found this quote on a different thread, but it speaks directly to the McCain supporters here - and less directly to Obamaniacs, the ones that don't realize that Obama will follow the same path.
"Why of course the people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don't want war: neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."
- Hermann Goehring
The only sensible course of action - which could lead this nation back to the path of freedom, peace and prosperity - would be to elect Ron Paul as president. Since that path would accomplish those goals, of course, there's not a chance in Hades. It would bankrupt the death merchants, excuse me, the "defense" contractors.
Actually I have to disagree with you, Black Knight, and I think I'm of your generation. I am so very proud that both of my college-aged kids and their involvement in the campaign this year. Obama has found a way to make these young people believe again that they can make a difference, and their vote is critical. My parents' generation were believers in the responsibility of everyone to vote and you still see that in the number of senior citizens voting. My boomer generation and even Gen-X lost the zeal and belief in the system.
This younger generation is out there making a difference. What have you done for your candidate this election? Insulting the young voter is not going to make them see your views. It only confirms that McCain and people like you refuse to see that things can be better. You follow the same old tired path. As Einstein said, "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result."
You say the younger generation doesn't have any common sense; they might say you are just old and unwilling to change.
I could not agree with you more Black Knight. I am in the younger generation and When I am in college and I notice so many other students don't have a clue what's going on with the liberal media and government, but they hear the word "change" and they think oh that's good so let's vote for Obama without doing reasarch of their own. It makes me sick that so many college students just listen to their liberal teachers and this quack running for president. We DON'T need socialism
Unfortunately, I think too many young people (not all) dont have enough knowledge, understanding, and I hate to say it, but national pride to know what the best direction for the country to go in is.
That's not my experience at all. I have found that the most uninformed, or misinformed voters, are not young people, but middle-aged and older folks, who ought to know better. The younger people I have canvassed know the facts, and the issues, and consider this election vital to their future.
And really - the patriotism argument? For God's sake, have enough dignity not to stoop to that.
would be to elect Ron Paul as president.
Now there's a low information voter. Please put down the Ayn Rand and get real.
Black Knight
I would say the opposite is true. Looking at the polls, most young people will be voting to get out of the rain. The "shower of rain" that you're referring to is the Bush presidency. Obama's central message is it's time to get out of that rain, that we've been told the sun is shining while we're getting more and more soaked. Obama is offering shelter (or an umbrella, depending on where you want to go with the metaphor) and McCain is saying, "don't worry, the sky will clear up any minute."
Also, today's youth is more educated and more informed than any generation in history. They're far more likely to hear a rumor (say, that Obama is a muslim) and look it up on-line than just repeat it, which is what I hear older people doing.
Advocate4Liberty
Fascism will come wrapped in a flag and carrying a Bible. ~ Sinclair Lewis
The more informed the voter is, the more he will go for Obama. The other party is just too awful and too vicious.
What posters like young Bill the college student don't realize is that there already IS socialism - only the major corporations are the beneficiaries! At least with Obama, the middle class will finally get a break.
Carol
I'm afraid you're forgetting about all the wealthy individuals who've seen their standard of living skyrocket while the majority of Americans were left behind. They've been beneficiaries of socialism too.
Black Knight did have a legitimate point Mystic Chick. The younger generation is ALWAYS more idealistic than the older generation (parents & grandparents). Although that can be good, it can also blindside younger voters into choosing a candidate with little applicable experience touting "change" and "hope" over a much more capable candidate who is truly qualified for the job. But this is nothing new; most "kids" will gravitate toward the younger candidate who "understands them" and is more hip than the old guy who seems "out of touch" because of the generational gap. It reminds me of the counterculture slogan: "Don't trust anyone over 30". Unfortunately, a lot of old baby boomers still think that way and passed their ideology onto their kids/grand kids.
Yet in Asian countries, McCain would be the favorite because of his wisdom and experience. In that region of the world. elders are respected and elevated to a position of honor. Yet in the USA, we do the opposite by worshipping youth instead.
No one is stating that American youth is stupid by virtue of their age...although I could make a point about ignorance factoring into unjustified political positions. However, there is a reason why you have to be at least 35 to be President of the United States. Our founding fathers knew the folly of youth and the value of wisdom gained by age. I agree with other bloggers that elections are nothing more than popularity contests.
As much as I despise Hillary and her husband, I would have to say that she is actually qualified to be President given her credentials. But given the fact that the Clintons came from Arkansas and Bill was a governor before becoming President, attacking Palin for her lack of "experience" is hypocritical by the media elite (who backed Clinton).
Unfortunately, the American mass media is overwhelming Kosher, which means that the establishment supports Democrats and their liberal leanings over the conservative GOP. Union voters rarely ever stray from the recommendations of their stewards or bosses. Teachers and school districts in general tend to me more liberal and Democrat leaning. That is why Obama and the Democrats cater to these special interest voters. Therefore, is it truly surprising that most American youth favor the candidates endorsed by their teachers, schools, and the pop media? In a way, kids are brainwashed by their peers and role models. Since they are impressionable, they actually listen to celebrity endorsements and mass media spin. Obama is the black version of JFK and RFK...
Despite my critique of Obama and liberals in general, I thought that the Iraq war was a waste of lives and money considering the fact that we had Saddam under our thumb. Bush isn't perfect, but then again, neither was Clinton. Yet the economy didn't go south until the Dems took over Congress, and Dems forget that Graham and Clinton deregulated the banking industry a decade ago. In addition, there has not been another major terrorist attack in the USA during the Bush administration. McCain is a moderate, not a conservative. He also has his own mind and agenda, not a Bush clone.
Voting for Obama is like voting for your class president based on looks and charisma. How much more shallow can you be? Voting for someone because you don't want to miss the bandwagon that your friends are on? Obama has flash, but no substance!
Obama believes in and has stated "Spread the Wealth". When a company has to make a decision between having to raise prices or let worker go and or both.
I would suggest you venture to evaluate how well Social this has helped job growth in Europe.
Also, I would saftly say that if Obama becomes president and if the Social Democrats get what they want then you can watch more jobs leave the country and people with money will be moving it out of the country.
Be caful about thoes who promiss too much.
John Ford
They've done surveys in Asian countries. You're wrong. They favor Obama. Go figure.
Tim
The idea that tax increases force employers to lay people off has no basis in fact. A company either has enough labor to meet the demand for its product or it doesn't. If they have excess capacity, they'll lay off workers. If they don't and they still lay off, they won't be able to meet demand. Taxes doesn't figure into it. Stop spreading ignorance and lies.
OK, then I guess you won't be counting on Social Security or Medicare. You don't need to pay your income taxes, and we don't need a mortgage bailout or farm subsidies.
This country is a democratic republic. We favor capitalism and free trade, but we do have some socialist-type programs and tendencies. It's time everyone wake up to that fact and quit throwing the dreaded S-word around like we're in a food fight. If you don't like socialism, you need to be prepared to do away with all the afore-mentioned programs.
cool I'm younger!!!
I am 45, my mother 72 and mother in law 83 all called me when Hillary dropped out to make sure I was casting my vote "correctly" and that I did not get swayed by "certain other evangelical family members"
Last week I got asked if my daughter was my grand daughter, now ... younger yippee
Obviously you can vote for whomever you want, however I have yet to find any young people who are voting for Obama that can give me a valid reason. They say, McCain is too old, Obama is smart. So what? The reason most of the young people are voting for Obama is because they are under the impression that it is the "cool" thing to do and that's what their friends are doing. The young people need to wake up and realize that they are not voting for homecoming court!
My 21 year old daughter was/is a Hillary supporter. When Hillary was out she didn't know what to do. I told her - you have a computer - do the research and make an educated decision. That's what the priviledge of voting is all about. You can vote for whomever you want, just do the country a favor and make your decision after you educate yourself on all candidates involved; and please do NOT listen to the media.
I totally agree with you. I think most young people are Obama supporters because they've been led to believe it's the cool thing to do. I believe that most young adults don't understand enough about the candidates or even our own government to make a sound educated decision about them. I believe they are going to vote for the presidency the same way they vote on American Idol.
i believe that at twenty-four, i would be considered a "young person" as you so aptly labeled those born toward the end of the Twentieth Century...and just so you don't accuse me and others like me of simply voting for the "cool" candidate, let me give you a couple reasons why i'm voting Obama for "Prom King"--oh sorry, i mean president of the United States of America.
1. Obama's tax plan--i recently graduated from college in Southern California, and i'm currently engaged (trying to save for the wedding). Now, after scrounging to pay the bills for a few months, i was blessed with a pretty decent job that allows my fiancé and me to live "comfortably"; however, we could definitely use more money to save for our very near future in which we will be getting married, moving, and planning a family. Under an Obama and Biden administration, we would gain an extra step on that path, because in this time of financial crisis, they are most concerned with the middle and lower classes (98% of society; the other 2% percent can just buy a smaller yacht next year) who need relief the most. i won't go into the gritty details of his tax plan, but i can if you would like.
2. Obama's health insurance--We the people are granted the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness...unfortunately, the current administration forgot about that. While my fiancé was in college, she was covered under her father's health insurance plan; i won't go into detail, but basically, he was uniformed about how long she would be covered (he though until January, but it was actually June), and she did not file for COBRA, thus too much time lapsed between coverage, and because she takes medications and has a preexisting condition, she is UNABLE to get health insurance period. We have asked myriad companies about paying a much higher premium , but they dey us; we have even looked into state health insurance, but the wait list is too long. Under Obama, she will get coverage, so she can receive the care she needs and deserves.
3. Obama's pick for VP--by choosing Biden, Obama has shown that he truly does put country first; McCain's selection of Palin illistrates that he puts McCain first. Your daughter and other Hilary supporters should be offended by McCain's little stunt. If women out there voted for Hilary because of her policies, then i strongly suggest you vote for Obama; however, if you voted for her simply because she was a female and you're now going for McCain, then i guess the Palin trick did exactly what McCain was hoping for.
i could go on, but this post is probably getting a bit long. There is one more thing...yes Obama is "cool" and calm and collected, he is running an amazing campaign like a seasoned pro, while McCain appears erratic, hot-tempered, and petty with a campaign that is bipolar and schizophrenic; during this turbulent time in history, i know who i would want behind the wheel steering the ship.
I also completely agree. When a young girl I know recently asked me who I was voting for and I said McCain, her response was, "Whyyyyyyyyyy? He's so, you know, he's so, well, he's old." Seriously, that was her response. When I said, "Why do you like Obama?" her real, true, actual response was, "He has a channel on my tv and it's cool." I can't make this up. As our conversation continued, it was revealed that she and the friends standing there with us did not know what the economy is or what a foreign policy is. "Why do we care about the other countries? He's going to be the president of our country, not the other countries."
I can't get excited about how many young people are getting involved this year when this is their level of involvement.
Seeker...I couldn't have said it better...and I am not what they are calling of the "young voters".
See, it's not that hard to list your reasons. That's all I was trying to say. You have your reasons and convictions - that's the way it is supposed to be. Unfortunately you are in the minority in so far as you could put together an argument for why you want Obama. You have looked into both sides and you made your decision. That's what I am saying that most young people do not do. My argument was not for or against Obama. My argument was that people vote based on what others are doing and what the media says, without doing research for themselves. That is my issue.
osama...i mean obama isnt smart. the only reason people are voting for him is because he's black and they want to be "a part of someting historical." so get it right, if obama wins we are all screwed
That was my point exactly too. doesn't prove that's wrong.
i do agree in a way Just my Thoughts...however, i believe that you can extend that to much of the electorate--young, old, male, female, rich, poor. i think that discussing politics and debating issues with respect and openness is vital to our progress as a nation, unfortunately most people would rather talk about movies or sports, or frivolous chatter. i do find it heartening though that so many people are showing "interest" in this election, even if it is for seemingly "shallow" reasons; i believe that not voting is far worse. Continuation of our education and educating others is the responsibility of everyone, and it is important that we create a dialogue that is approachable for all. i truly appreciate dissent and disagreement--it helps me develop, alter, and reinforce my own positions and convictions. If you feel this way about young people, then i ask you to continue to engage them in conversation and challenge them to expand the depth of their beliefs... and i thank you for your opinion.
How insulting to make such a generalization that younger voters only vote for Obama because he is cool. All the younger people I have talked with have very valid, informed reasons why they want Obama for President.
Now it's the Republicans voting for McCain that I have found to have the weakest reasons. My father whom I love and respect tells me that his father said to always vote Republican so he always has. Great reason! Wow. Like the parties haven't changed in 100 years???
One of our Republican employees rationale for voting McCain? Obama's too young. And? Nope. Well, unless you count that Rush Limbaugh says it's McCain all the way.
Don't put down the young voters. I find it admirable that they are once again getting into the political process. For too long we have felt that the government is out of our hands. Well, the new and young voters don't believe that anymore. It's an exciting time.
my daughter turned 18 this year and I have found that her and her friends are the most informed voters yet. Their access to the internet and cable news has really given them more information than we had in the past. I have read alot of post putting down the younger voters (under 30) but hopefully they make a better decision than the "older" voters did the last 2 elections.
Why is it when the young voter listen to Bush all of this wasn't being said. For two election now we have heard the same old thing. When it favors your candiate the young people are so much more informed these days. Now because they are rejecting the what is being shove in the face about the republicans, they are uninformed.
Make up your mind people. Young people vote for their future. Middle-age people vote for their retirement and older people vote for their control over younger people.
Young people today are so much better informed, with the internet, 24 hour cable news, rallies, conventions and what I like to call freedom of speech. They don't have to whisper who they really like, they won't be dis-owned for who they really like, they won't be treated unfairly for not following suite and they are not concerned about the petty things ( i.e. a person color). Young people want to be in control of their destiny, not middle-age or old people controlling their destiny.
I applaud all young people when the particpate in the election process. It is their obligation and right to control their future.
well said Jeanette
To everyone who says that young people are voting for Obma because he's cool:
1. What do you think about morons voting against him because: 1) he's a Muslim; 2) he has ties to terrorists; 3) he's too "smooth"; 4) he wasn't born in America....the list goes on? What do you think of those people?
2. If it's true, what does this say about you and the generation you created?
3. If you can't find a young person who has based their decision on issue, keep looking. They're out there. You're reading their thoughts right here.
4. Young people aren't gullible, they just have enough optimism left in their hearts and minds to think beyond the constraints created by time and disappointment that old people have. They can still believe. And this year Obama has given them something to believe in. I'm a bit over 30, with a graduate degree, and this is the first candidate that I've believed in, the first time I'm not selecting the lesser of two evils. I don't expect to change your minds, but Barack Obama is change that I believe in.
My stance this political season is NOT to talk politics and that's so unusal for me. Unfortunately, this political season has brought out the nasty negative in some folks that I personally know. In order to keep the peace (and my sanity), I refuse to talk shop. When ones does venture into the territory, I smile and politely has them to change the subject ...
Phatties,
I find myself in the same boat.
I tried raising some issues and holy cow, was I ever sorry I said anything.
This was family and I felt bullied.
Lesson learned. I'm keeping my mouth shut about it from now on to keep peace here.
This is very much true. When some one finds out I'm not voting for their candidate, I get told all the reasons why my candidate is not the best choice and theirs is, and it gets ugly. I don't need this stress, and I can't wait until november 5 when this will all be over with and people will retract their claws and chill out.
"Obama" A divider not a uniter. His arrogance is disgusting. He's really been way to over advertised for me to ever buy into his slick little game. You only over advertise an inferior product to move it out of the warehouse so the updated product can come out later. Obama and Obiden what a Washington Lobby Duo these two make. The mystery candidate and his oh god, we know this partner way to well to vote for either one of them. Give me real change. Maverick McCain and Frontier Palin. Works for me!!!
Remember the opposite of Progress is Congress. A democratic congress, Palosi, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Harry Reed, Charlie Rangle, Etc. The team that gave you the latest financial meltdown of the century. I would personally never do anything Pres. Obama ever suggested, his words are flawed. A divider not a uniter!
sweaver, Obama a divider? I see no evidence of this. I believe that Obama's ideas for this country are in line with most of Americans, not to mention the rest of the world. The true dividers in this country are Rush, Hanitty, OReilly, and Faux News. These are the divisive instruments that are destroying America. Everyone please just vote.
Southpaw..add in Bush, Cheney, McCain and Palin. I cannot understand why people claim Obama is a divider??? I think he strives to unify...
You know, SWeaver, I would be extremely happy to be totally divided from ignorance, hate, and basically everything else you said and stand for.
If Obama is a divider, how come he is leading at the polls and McCain is lagging way behind ? Obama has more electoral votes than McCain too.
so ? wheres the logic ! THE REPS CANT ACCEPT OBAMA UNITED AMERICA THIS TIME !!!!!!
I just don't get the attraction to obama.....Can anyone explain it to me? He has done nothing that i can find to explain it....Is it just that the democrat's are so desprate to win the White house they would elect satan....We all know he is a Muslim (even if he won't admit it),we also know he is a leftist and hates America... So explain it to me...Not that we need a change, that's lame, but what draws people to him... You only have to read his books to know how dangerous this guy is....
I differ from my Mom, she won't vote for Obama just because he's black. Two funny things here for me #1) she roots for Tiger Woods and #2) she's from western PA - I have a lot of family there, Murtha really wasn't wrong about what he said. It was just inconveniently politically incorrect.
Obama is educated, intelligent, calm, cool and composed. McCain is not, nor is he who he used to be, even just as far back as my primary vote. I'm voting for the man who is clearly smarter than me, I made the mistake of voting for a guy I could drink a beer with in 2000. I'm sorry for that mistake America.
Steve. I'm from eastern PA and take great offense about your comments that Murtha wasn't wrong. I vote for who I think is the better candidate regardless of their race. Ask your self what % of blacks are voting for Obama? I've seen numbers as high as 98-99%. No one is pointing this out as being racist because it's not politically correct.
Impartial
Are you really going down the "reverse racism" road? Don't. Blacks vote for Dems by a vast majority in most elections. This time the Dem also happens to be black so the black community's Democratic lean is even more pronounced. To say that blacks won't vote for McCain because he's white would be an interesting comparison, but there's no evidence to suggest that. You're not saying that, are you?
Impartial:
I disagree for years blacks have vote for a democratic candidate regardless of their race.
Why is it now that so many are actually coming out to vote? Because there is a candidate who actually wants their vote. There is a candidate who actually thinks that blacks are important to this country. This is a candidate for all the people. This candidate makes everyone believe in themselves and our country. This candidate will not ignore the minorities in this country.
So I guess because he is black and blacks are actually backing him, there is a problem. This wasn't said when Bush won. All the whites who jumped on Bush bandwagon. Bush promised to unite, he didn't say who he would unite, but it was obvious that he was speaking about uniting white America.
How can you say you vote for who you think is the better candidate? I guess no one else does?
Blacks are voting for the better candidate. Blacks didn't turn out for Jesse Jackson this way, nor did the turn out for Shirley Chesiman this way. Both of those candidate are black. So what is the problem now. Both ran for President!!!
I remember when my mom took me to register to vote when i was 18, the times that we agree on who to vote for a few, but i will carry on the tradition and take my daughter to register to vote (my son too) when she turns 18, no matter what party she decides to go with.
It is understandable that these conflicts would exist. I question Kristen Ingraham though. If she is so close with her mother and wanted to "shake her to tell her that she is being tricked" why didn't she? She said she didn't because "She is my mother." That is the exact reason why she SHOULD have been open and honest with her mother about McCain's lies. Would you want your own mother to be a fool if you saw it happening? My daughter could shake me about anything and I would listen. Next time, Kristen, do it!

Did nobody else see this article for what it what?? It was a fluff piece! The truth is, parents WANT their children to be independant. Its like when a child doesnt pick their parent's college pick, but in the end, they are happy they have passion for where they DO chose to go. There are plenty of people who dont agree with me about this election. In fact, so much so that my fiance and i have STOPPED speaking politics until after we have BOTH voted. My father and I have gotten into heated debates as well; and he says the same thing, its the tale as old as time, children and parents disagree... at least your voting, even if the parents dont agree with it. We have had problems in the past with young voters not voting.. articles like this and arguments like this make it more discouraging for young voters.
Southpaw Liberal, you must not be looking too hard if you can't find anything about BO that would divide this country. He is successfully brain washing (along with the media) the country with his lies about not taxes the poor. Right off the bat he plans to let the Bush tax cuts expire, that will automatically raise your taxes no matter what level of income.
Have you seen his speak about reparations and saying the Constitution is out of touch?
Get real, you're a die hard liberal who would vote for anyone with socialist views.
gus, Actually Obama is going to lower taxes for most Americans, however if you're in the $260,000 yearly income bracket you will have your taxes raised. And yes, as you said, I am a die hard liberal, thank you for the complement.
And you believe that!!! What a joke.
It will not automatically raise your taxes...that is an outright lie and scare tactic.
dave, yes I do believe it. I believe it at least as much as I believe any other politician that's made the same promise, like Bush Sr. He lied!
They all lie!!!!! However, if you know anything about business, Obama's policies will drag us further down. We need jobs in the US. Unions make it impossible to compete globally and our corporate tax rate drives away business. Why would you open a business here at a 35% corporate tax rate when you can open one in Ireland with an 11% corporate tax rate. Also with a lower corporate tax rate you can hire more people who will pay taxes and that will create more tax revenue. Please look ahead.
Southpaw liberal...Good for you..You are right on point...
I have a question...won't all of the things either candidate proposes have to be passed through Congress first? So....all of the "promises" really could take awhile to go into effect, even if at all, and given our wonderful selection of congressional leaders, who knows what may or may not come to pass.
Dave, you mentioned Ireland...i strongly suggest that you do your research on their economy and their politics before you trump them up as a prime example to aspire to (don't just listen to a line by McCain)...they have very "social minded" views--free education and affordable healthcare for EVERYONE. Oh yeah, and they tax plastic items such as debit cards and plastic bags and they tax the wealthiest at a much higher rate than the middle and lower classes--thus redistributing the wealth. If conservatives looked into Ireland, they wouldn't be so quick to use them as their talking point about taxes.
I would much prefer if Hilary was still in the running but Obama works for me as well.
When I watch this drama all unfold, it becomes perfectly clear who has the most smarts, youth, savvy and the morality to seriously consider Obama. To watch the Republican candidates just makes me want to throw up...so many half truths, and outright lies...who would want either of them making critical decisions on my behalf?
Mother knows best!!!!!
You have a Constitutional right in this country to Vote and Support who you want. You should not be abused or ridiculed for your decision. I feel it's unAmerican for some to belittle or intimidate you for your choice of candidate. I have two daughters one thinks as I do politically and the other is quite the opposite. I'm very glas they both speak their minds about things they feel strongly.......I feel that this shows I've done my job. Independent thinkers!!! We need more of them.
JECD
Bravo to you and yours!!!
"My mother seems to think you have to have this elitist degree … It’s like she’s looking down on me, because I’m not educated enough.”
Since when did pursuing a post graduate education become 'elitist'? I have to say that I am really getting sick of that word. Whether you agree with Obama's political views or not, he was a man who came from modest means, went to Harvard Law School, and was elected to the Harvard Review. He strived to attain more than he was given in life, and rose above his situation. That kind of achievement used to count for something in this country. My father busted his butt to get a college education, and he instilled the desire in me to do the same thing. He is a Republican through and through, but would never agree that Obama is elitist or that pursuing an education, whatever the level is elitist either.
There is no doubt that young people have no idea what happens when someone is elected that has never done anything except give a good speech. He might be a charmer and America has become caught up in his rhetoric - that still doesn't make him a good choice for president. No experience, nothing substantial accomplished in his political career, less than desireable associations (not just one or two but several) and with no one caring - it's just we need change and he seems to offer it - change for the sake of change isn't always a good thing. I respect everyone's right to choose - but I don't believe that our youth do understand how electing the wrong person just because he talks a good talk will make our country a better place to live.
I believe the youth have as good or better grasp on politics than most of us. They haven't been brainwashed or become cynics about the process yet. The young voters I know that are voting on either side have look at the candidates and have a greater understanding of what these candidates are proposing than do most of the middle aged and older voters I've talked with.
It will take the next generations to fix our world. We have made a mess of it. The fact that Obama has got them involved in the process is extraordinary! Hopefully this involvement will last their lifetime.
the young people do understand what happens when you elect the wrong person because it happened in 00 and 04. I have paid more in taxes under bush's tax cuts then i did under clinton, infact I have done the best under the clinton years.
Obama was right about the war in iraq, he was one of only four sentors that voted no, now look we have the talaban getting stronger while we are getting weaker and losing soliders everyday for what control of the oil. You people maynot beleive it but most young people do pay attention, but since we are infact younger we automactically don't know what we are talking about so no one listens.
I also happen to work in the broken healthcare system. I have watched patients day in and day out die because the insurance company has decided that they no longer want to cover a patients treatment, or they want tissue samples over and over while the patient gets sicker and sicker, by the time the insurance decides they will cover treatment its too late. Or all the other people that can't even get health care because they has cervical cancer or depression which is a preexsisting condition.
I am so tired of everyone calling obama a socialist. What do you call wanting to buy up the bad mortgages and having a stake in it. What do you call medicare, social security, medical, bailout package, and both of bushs stimulas rebates......when I was in school it was what they call socialism.
This country needs change and believe me the majority of young people are paying attention.
OBAMA 08
Stop downing th young. They let you have Bush/Cheney. Stop whinning about their decision to elect who they chose in a candidate.
Bush has brought this country down. Along with all you republicans who supported him in 2000 and 2004. We have had the worse 8 years in history because of you republicans whinning trying to get your way. Grow up and get over it. LEAVE THE YOUNG VOTERS TO THEIR OWN FATE. DIDN'T SOMEONE LEAVE YOU TO YOURS?
People should vote whom they choose for themselves. Parents have no say over what their children think nor should they when they become adults. Stop drinking the Kool Aid folks even Fox has thrown in the towel. Barack has run a better campaign, has a better Vice Presidential choice, remains calm and collected and makes sense. John McCain lost the moment he was no longer true to himself. Too bad. I did like him before. Now he is scrambling with Caribou Barbie who has now moved on to her own campaign at John's expense. You are going to see a sea of change. People don't scare easily anymore and would like the government to just focus on repairing what they have already screwed up. Spend less time blaming and more time doing.
I'm not sure, but I think it was Winston Churchill who said something like "Show me a man under 40 who is not a liberal and I'll show you a man with no heart. Show me a man over 40 who is not a conservative and I'll show you a man with no brain. Mind you, I'm not sure of the age, but the rest is pretty close.
In my business I have to sell my goods and services. It's made me good at BSing. It also makes it easy to recognize someone else who is good at BS. Obama is good at BS. McCain, but for age, could be the Bush twin. Both Biden and Palin are proof this whole mess is a joke. No one could promise that if elected they would do what needs to be done. Let's elect Charlie Daniels and have him pick four mothers on a tight budget and let them manage our country's finances. They for sure know when there is not enough money for ice cream this week. But then again, being that responsible would take common sense.
I'm all for your proposal with Charlie Daniels and 4 mothers. Look at where Washington "experience" has gotten us! Surely they could do a much better job by just using some good ole fashioned common sense!
Mystic chick, you must be missing reading a lot of editorials and research papers on Obama but I doubt if it would matter as you would not believe them anyway
My main reason was I wanted to say that the FBI has stopped looking for the man that killed a Penn. Police chief in 1980 and that is here in the US and then look at the landscape in Afganhistan and wonder why they have not found Bin Laden in 7 years
You assume I'm voting for Obama.
My main reason was I wanted to say that the FBI has stopped looking for the man that killed a Penn. Police chief in 1980 and that is here in the US and then look at the landscape in Afganhistan and wonder why they have not found Bin Laden in 7 years
What on earth does that have to do with the differences between parents and children regarding elections?
I won't talk to my daughter about politics because I know she'd find my opinion insulting. I am so sad that she and so many of her peers take Obama at face value. If I believed everything he said I might vote for him too. But my opinion of a person is based on more than his words and his style. I look at his actions, and Obama has precious little known history. What he does have is friends with history. The Wright and Ayers connections ought to be enough to scare anyone away, not to mention his rather nasty wife, but for some reason they just don't get any traction. Perhaps that's because the media downplay them. Check out this piece by Andrew McCarthy in the National Review Online:
The L.A. Times Suppresses Obama’s Khalidi Bash Tape

For the most part, the media has miserably failed to do their job and bring the story to the American people. This election, much more so than any others, has been a great disappointment and the media is one reason why.
MsNovember... Have you questioned McCain's or Palin's connections with shady people - ie. Gordon LIddy, Charles Keating, Rev. Hagee, Rick Davis, The AIP and Todd Palin?
As far as looking at actions, McCain's erratic campaign behavior, his total change from his 2000 candidacy, his selection of Sarah Palin as VP and Phil Gramm as financial advisors certainly do not add to my comfort level in supporting his candidacy.
Not to mention the fact that his campaign rallies are coming pretty darn close to inciting riots......
Carol,
If I'm not mistaken, one of the VP picks has an ethics problem now.
What would happen if McCain were elected, and for some reason died, say for example, from old age, Sara Palin has already been found guilty of abusing her powers as Governor of in a previous probe.
Mom is right. She's been around the block and knows a huckster when she sees one. The daughter will eventually learn.
But it will be too late!!
how did we get Bush?CHeney
Helen,...How did we get Bush/Cheney? They cheated.
right...both times..The first tiem they got the USSC to decide a state issue....
Talking about Obama lying and McCain not is just silly. It has been shown repeatedly how McCain lies to get votes (and will virtually do anything including picking a VEEP who can't speak proper English). If you have ANY question, watch this video of news reports where he is doing it. It is interesting however, that they can't seem to find any similarities on Obama where he flilp flopped on what he says, or has lied to make a similar video... hmmmmm
Lenore, it's always all lies. It's politics. We can start with Richard Nixon. Politics is equal to deception. They've shown our children deception is the key. It's sickening to see people fall for this crap. It makes no difference what party, that's the way it is.
Lenore, you should probably stop getting your source information from Youtube along with everyone else.
Jake, You tube just put it on. These were actual news reports. Unless maybe you think the McCain guy was an actor and impersonated? :)
As on all other matters, When the test of time has past, daughters realize that mom was right after all. As for shaking your mom, that is just not right and could be considered assault. But let your friends mislead you into ignorance, this is how you chose to learn-the hard way. When the media is selling Obama so hard and he himself is selling himself so hard, at what point do you realize that you are just being sold something you would not normally buy?
This is an age, race and gender sensitive election so yeah, everyone is fighting and feeling personally attacked. This is why some people want nothing to do with whole charade. Both want free trade and the death penalty so whatever, praise who you want but it's all the same to me. It's entertainment to me, and how hilarious watching both sides fighting and so, so sure they are the right one.
Obama/Mccain 08
Mccain/Obama 08
I refuse to attack or even just belittle anyone in support of either of these men, especially not my family.
It's no wonder this country is circling the drain. A review of the infantile comments posted on this subject (not to mention the stupid nature of the subject itself) speaks volumes about the pathetic American "intellect".
Perhaps then you should grace us with your infinitesimal knowledge and run for president. Or would you rather just sit back and spew your empty, sardonic diatribes...if you are going to make a comment such as this, it would be nice if you elaborated so those who you are insulting could respond.
This article may be a non-issue, but there are many more frivolous subjects out there, at least it creates a dialogue--an "infantile" dialogue in which you are a participant on an article that you took the time to read.
